What is Bronchoscopy?

Bronchoscopy is an endoscopic procedure that allows doctors to view the inside of the airways and lungs. A bronchoscope, a thin tube with a camera and light, is inserted through the nose or mouth and passed through the windpipe. This procedure helps diagnose diseases such as lung infections, cancers, and obstructions, or it may be used for therapeutic purposes.

Why You May Need a Bronchoscopy

A bronchoscopy is performed for two primary reasons: evaluation and treatment. Your doctor may recommend a bronchoscopy if symptoms such as persistent cough, wheezing, or difficulty breathing are present. The procedure may also be used to obtain biopsy samples from abnormal lung or airway tissue or lymph nodes located near the airways.

Bronchoscopy Treatment Procedures

In addition to diagnosing lung and airway diseases, bronchoscopy can also be used to treat conditions directly. These include removing mucus or fluid from the airways, extracting foreign objects, widening narrowed airways, and performing airway lavage (washing out the airways).
